Albany – Money from the state Transportation Bond Act of 2005 has been targeted for upgrade projects at airports in the Hudson Valley and Catskills. The largest grant goes to Orange County Airport in Montgomery with a total of $1.1 million. That will be divided between water and sewer projects and access controls, gates, closed circuit TV and lighting. Sullivan County International Airport in Bethel will receive $357,500 for electrical current devices and perimeter security fence access controls and gate operators. County Legislator Ronald Hiatt is a private pilot with a plane at the airport. He said the funding will provide for needed upgrades. “These fences are designed to prevent animals from getting in at all, and the lighting, is for safety and security,” he said. “Certainly, whenever anybody is taxiing in at night or putting an airplane in or out of a hangar at night, it’s nice to have that lighting.” Sidney Municipal Airport in Delaware County will receive $255,000 for emergency power system, closed circuit TV and lighting. Kingston-Ulster Airport will receive $30,000 for monitored security and a fire alarm system. Joseph Y. Resnick Airport near Ellenville will receive $580,000 for a new terminal building and construction of a sheriff’s substation. Randall Airport in Orange County will receive $300,000 for perimeter inspection road. Freehold airport in Greene County will receive $50,000 for clearing trees on the runway approach and security, fencing, gates and vehicular controls.
